Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus (diabetes) is a chronic metabolic disorder that requires lifelong medical care. In Austria, around 600,000 people suffer from diabetes. A broad distinction can be made between type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as gestational diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is by far the most common form and is usually the consequence of overweight/obesity. The major driver is insulin resistance, which means that the insulin effect is weakend throughout the body and therefore less sugar is taken up by the cells, hence the blood glucose concentration increases (hyperglycemia). Through adequate treatment the risk for diabetes-related complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, damage to the retina or the nervous system can be reduced. The various therapeutic options for type 2 diabetes have increased significantly in recent years and enable effective glucose control with fewer side effects. I would be happy to advise you on a treatment tailored to your needs, taking into account your comorbidities and an optimal quality of life.
