thyroid

The thyroid produces the vital hormones T3 and T4, which play a key role in controlling many metabolic processes in our body. Thyroid dysfunction is one of the most common hormonal disorders and can have a major impact on well-being.

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause weight gain, tiredness, fatigue, depression or digestive problems. The most common cause is chronic inflammation, known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

Treatment consists of replacing the thyroid hormones that are not produced in sufficient quantities. Precise adjustment of the thyroid hormones is particularly important during pregnancy .

Hyperthyroidism , on the other hand, can be accompanied by restlessness, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, sweating, hair loss and weight loss. The most common causes of hyperthyroidism are Graves' disease and so-called "hot nodules" (autonomous adenomas).

In addition to drug inhibition of excessive thyroid hormone production, surgical procedures and radioiodine therapy may also be used to treat hyperthyroidism, depending on the trigger.

Nodules can develop in the thyroid over the course of a person's life, although these are mostly benign. However, there are also malignant thyroid nodules, which is why an ultrasound examination and possibly a thyroid scintigraphy may be necessary.

In my practice, I carry out a careful assessment and treatment of the thyroid diseases mentioned. If you are planning to have children or are pregnant, I would be happy to advise you on the ideal setting of your thyroid function. In addition, we work closely with the most experienced thyroid surgeons in the country in the event that an operation on a thyroid nodule is necessary.
