Overweight/Obesity

Overweight and obesity occur when more calories are consumed than burned over a certain period of time and therefore excess body fat accumulates. Overweight/obesity is defined according to the Body Mass Index (BMI), which is calculated from height and weight. A BMI of 25 - 29.9 kg/m2 is considered overweight, a BMI > 30kg/m2 is considered obesity.

Overweight and obesity pose an increased risk for a number of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as high blood pressure, coronary heart disease or diabetes. Overweight can also be caused by hormonal factors. A typical example is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), in which increased production of male hormones from small cysts in the ovaries can lead to menstrual irregularities as well as metabolic problems such as weight gain and insulin resistance. In addition to a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular physical activity, there are also new pharmagolocial approaches to treating obesity.
