Adrenal Disorders
The adrenal gland consists of two hormone-producing glands, which are located on top of each kidney. The adrenal gland produces the vital cortisol but also other hormones such as aldosterone and the stress hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline. Overproduction of one or several of these hormones, e.g. due to a benign adrenal tumor (adenoma), can cause a number of secondary complications such as high blood pressure, diabetes or osteoporosis. One focus of my work is the diagnosis and treatment of adrenal gland diseases, including hypercortisolism (Cushing's syndrome), hyperaldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease) and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).
